Family Life
Augustus was born in Velitrae, south-east of Rome, as Gaius Octavius. His father was the first in the family to become a senator, but died when Augustus was a young child. his mother, Atia, was Julius Caesar's niece.
Augustus' marriage to Livia produced no children, but he did have a daughter, Julia, from his previous marriage to Scribonia and also adopted Gaius and Lucuius, (the sons of his good friend, Agrippa) as his own children.
Augustus fell ill on the way to Capri with Tiberius. After several days, he died at Nola.

Gain of Power
When Julius Caesar was assassinated, Augustus learned that Caesar had adopted him in his will. This association helped his rise to power. After defeating Caesar's chief assassins, Augustus and Marc Antony reached an agreement. The roman empire was divided, Marc Antony taking the east, Augustus taking the west.
Reasons for Fame
Augustus hosted games, claimed to have restored 82 temples over one year and erected many buildings. Some more well known are: The theatre of Apollo, the Horologium and the Mausoleum of Augustus. Alot of his popularity seemed to come from the fact that he governed in public interest, and acknowledged his appreciation of the general public's support.
The End
Augustus had chosen his friend, Agrippa to be his sucesor, and when Agrippa died, Augustus decided on one of Agrippa's sons, either Gaius or Lucius. However, when Gaius and Lucius died, Augustus had to turn to Tiberius, his wife's eldest son from her previous marriage. It was while Augustus was on his way to Capri with Tiberius that he fell ill and died several days later.
